Record Retention Guidelines by State

What are record retention guidelines?

Every state has its own rules on top of the federal government rules. Each state has what is called a State Archivist. A State Archivist documents the state’s record retention guidelines for businesses and individuals. The physician or practice should work with either their state Archivist or someone that manages Quality and Risk/Compliance within their organization to help with this process.

Please forward your questions to the Records_Retention@cms.hhs.gov mailbox and someone from the records team will respond to your inquiry.
